Spice Filling Machine
A spice filling machine is the dosing head, not the whole line — and the head you need depends entirely on whether you are packing ground spice or whole/coarse spice. Ground spice wants an auger; whole spice wants a volumetric cup or net weigher. Spec the wrong head and you wear it out on oil, or you separate the blend in the cup. The filler is a component decision that cascades into the whole line.

Spice Filling Machine
| Product | Head | Why | Tolerance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ground (chilli, turmeric) | Twin-pitch auger | Controls fine, floodable powder | ±0.5–1.5% |
| Whole (peppercorn, cumin) | Volumetric cup | Free-flow, density-stable | ±1.5–2.5% |
| Mixed blend (curry) | Agitated auger | Prevents segregation | ±1–2% |
Oily spices (chilli, paprika, some curry) coat and abrade the auger and flight. Within months a standard auger wears and its CV drifts. The fix is material: a hardened or coated auger (e.g. hard-chrome or PTFE-coated flight) and a generous flight clearance so oil film does not bind it. Cheap mild-steel augers on chilli are a 6-month replacement.
A curry blend has fine turmeric and coarse coriander. In a volumetric cup, the fines settle and the coarse ride on top — the first pouches are heavy on coriander, the last on turmeric. An agitated auger with a constant head keeps the blend homogeneous through the dose. This is why mixed blends almost never belong in a cup.
A Leicester producer of a 16-spice curry blend ran a volumetric cup at 44 pouches/min. Lab found blend separation: coriander ±18% across a run, turmeric ±14%. Also the cup wore on chilli oil at 7 months.
We moved to an agitated twin-pitch auger with a hard-chrome flight and level sensor. Outcome:
| Metric | Before (cup) | After (auger) |
|---|---|---|
| Coriander variation | ±18% | ±3% |
| Turmeric variation | ±14% | ±2% |
| Auger life | 7 months | >24 months |
| Speed | 44/min | 45/min |
Blend segregation is a compliance issue: If your label claims a recipe, a separating filler makes every pack a different recipe. An agitated auger is the only way to hold the blend.
EU food law, 10/2011 contact, and organic/label-claim accuracy (blend must match label). 316L where regulated.
FDA food contact; ASTA cleanliness for spice. USDA-organic needs non-commingling records.
Halal certification (spice lines commonly certified); humidity drives sealed hopper.
GCC/SASO conformity, Arabic label. Foil laminate for premium spice shelf life in heat.
No — auger for ground, cup/weigher for whole. Mixed blends need an agitated auger to avoid segregation.
A volumetric cup segregates fines from coarse. An agitated auger with constant head keeps it homogeneous.
Mild steel ~6–8 months; hard-chrome or coated flight >24 months. Spec the coating for oily spice.
±0.5–1.5% auger on ground; ±1.5–2.5% cup on whole. Demand a 30-sample CV.
