Powder Detergent Packaging Machine

Powder Detergent Packaging Machine

Low Bulk Density and Foam Break the Wrong Feeder

Laundry detergent powder is one of the hardest dry products to package because it is light, fluffy, electrostatic, and chemically aggressive — bulk density around 0.35–0.5 g/mL, and it froths when it falls. A powder detergent packaging machine has to de-aerate and meter without corroding, and most general-purpose fillers fail on at least one of those. The line is a materials-and-flow problem before it is a speed problem.

Why Detergent Breaks Standard Fillers

  • Low bulk density. A cup that holds 30 g of salt holds 12 g of detergent — volume-to-weight is wrong, and the pack looks empty.
  • Static foam. Falling powder builds charge, clings to the hopper, and "puffs" at the seal, leaving headspace voids.
  • Corrosion. Surfactant and builder chemistry attacks mild steel and some seals within months.
  • Angled repose. It bridges in cones; needs an agitator or vibratory floor.

Feeder Choice

Approach Fit for detergent Note
Volumetric cup Poor Density swing too wide
Single auger Fair Needs de-aerating hopper
Twin-pitch auger + de-aer Good Standard solution
Net weigher (granular) Good for pods/granules Over-specified for fine

The workhorse is a twin-pitch auger fed from a de-aerating hopper (slow stir, no air entrainment) with an ion bar at the fill throat to kill static puff.

Field Data: A Mexican Laundry Line

A Monterrey plant ran 500 g detergent pouches at 50/min on a single auger with no de-aeration. Problems: 3.0% voids (foam), 2.6% underweight, and hopper corrosion at 14 months.

We fitted a de-aerating hopper with slow agitator, twin-pitch auger, ion bar at throat, and swapped contact parts to 316L with PTFE seals. Outcome:

Metric Before After
Tolerance ±2.6% ±1.1%
Void/foam reject 3.0% 0.5%
Hopper life 14 months >36 months
Speed 50/min 52/min

Corrosion is a TCO item: A mild-steel hopper that lasts 14 months costs more in downtime and recall risk than 316L from the start. Spec the contact material to the chemistry.

Selection Errors

  • Cup filler on detergent. Density swing guarantees underweight or empty-looking packs.
  • No de-aeration. You package air; the pack voids and the weight drifts.
  • Mild-steel contact. Surfactants eat it; plan for 316L and chemically resistant seals.

Compliance by Region

European Union

EU detergent regulation (EC 648/2004) dosing and labeling; REACH on substances. CE machinery; food-grade not required but traceability is.

United States

EPA/FTC labeling for detergent claims; CPSC child-resistant packaging for pods (not powder, but note if you add pods). UL electrical.

Southeast Asia

Halal where relevant; high humidity makes de-aeration and sealed hopper essential.

Middle East

GCC/SASO conformity, Arabic label. Heat-stable seals for summer warehouses.

Procurement Traps

  • Quoting a "powder filler" without stating it is detergent — you get a food auger that corrodes.
  • No ion bar; static puff rejects climb and you blame the sealer.
  • Omitting 316L from the contact spec to save cost; you pay in hopper life.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a cup filler pack detergent?

Only for dense, stable granular detergent. Fine fluffy powder needs de-aerating auger or you underfill.

Why are my packs full of air?

Falling powder entrains air (foam). A de-aerating hopper and slow auger fix the voids.

Do I need 316L?

For surfactant/builder chemistry, yes — mild steel corrodes in a year. 316L with PTFE seals is the standard.

How tight is tolerance realistic?

±1–1.5% on de-aerated auger; ±2.5%+ on a cup. Demand a 30-sample CV at your bulk density.
