Milk Powder Canning Line

Milk Powder Canning Line

Compaction and Headspace, Not Speed, Protect the Powder

On a milk powder canning line, the variables that decide shelf life and food safety are settling density, oxygen headspace and the modified-atmosphere purge — not the cans-per-minute. Powder that compacts unevenly weighs wrong at the label claim; headspace oxygen above 2% drives off-flavor and nutrient loss in months. A line tuned only for speed will can a product that fails stability.

Can vs Jar vs Bag-in-Box

Container Barrier Fill method Best use
Composite can Good (foil membrane) Auger / net weigh Retail infant formula
Tinplate can Excellent Net weigh Long-shelf bulk
PET jar Fair (needs barrier) Auger Retail, see-through
Bag-in-box Good (foil bag) Net weigh Institutional / B2B

Compaction and the Label Claim

Milk powder aerates from the ribbon mixer and settles after filling. If you fill by volume to a "full" can, settling drops the net weight below label claim within days. The fix is to fill by weight with a light tamp or vibration to reach a known settled density, then verify with a checkweigher. Typical settled density target: 0.55–0.65 g/mL for spray-dried whole milk.

Headspace Oxygen and MAP

After fill, the can headspace holds air at ~21% oxygen. A nitrogen purge (snift or counter-pressure) drops it to <2%. For infant formula and full-fat powder, this is what prevents oxidation of fat-soluble vitamins and off-flavor. The purge must happen before the lid seamer closes — a double-seam with trapped air is a failed seam for shelf life.

Field Data: A Malaysian Infant-Formula Line

A Selangor plant ran 900 g infant-formula cans at 35 cans/min with headspace oxygen at 3.4% (single snift) and a 1.8% under-claim rate from settling. Storage was tropical (30°C, 80% RH).

We added a two-stage vacuum-then-nitrogen purge (2.8 s, two vacuum pulls + N₂ flood), set fill by net weight with a 0.4 s settle vibration, and moved the seamer to a verified double-seam profile. Outcome:

Metric Before After
Headspace O₂ 3.4% 1.6%
Under-claim rate 1.8% 0.2%
Oxidation (6-mo) Off-flavor noted None
Speed 35 cans/min 35 cans/min

Tropical storage: In SEA and GCC, a can that passes stability at 25°C will fail at 35°C warehouse. Validate the powder, not the line, at the real distribution temperature.

Selection Errors

  • Filling by volume to "full." Settling kills your label claim; fill by weight.
  • Single snift purge. One nitrogen flush rarely beats 2% O₂ with moist tropical air; use vacuum-then-N₂.
  • Seamer not validated. A double seam is a shelf-life seal; it needs a seam-teardown spec, not a visual check.

Compliance by Region

European Union

EU GMP for infant formula, 316L contact, CIP, and Codex STAN 207 for compositional spec. Full batch traceability and metal detection.

United States

FDA 21 CFR 106/107 for infant formula (nutrient and quality controls), cGMP, and a validated seam and MAP record.

Southeast Asia

Halal (MUIS/MUI) certification is mandatory for export; tropical MAP validation. Humidity control at the filler.

Middle East

GCC/SASO conformity, Arabic label, and foil-membrane cans for summer. Halal certification on the line.

Procurement Traps

  • Buying a filler without the seamer in scope — the seam is your shelf-life seal.
  • No MAP analyzer in the quote; you cannot prove headspace O₂ without one.
  • Skipping checkweighing; label-claim defense needs it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can vs jar for retail?

Composite can with foil membrane for best barrier and cost; PET jar only if you accept a shorter shelf or add barrier coating.

What headspace oxygen is acceptable?

Below 2% for full-fat and infant formula. Above that, oxidation and vitamin loss are measurable within months in heat.

Why fill by weight, not volume?

Powder settles after fill; volume-to-full under-claims as it compacts. Weight with settle gives a defensible net claim.

Do I need a seam teardown spec?

Yes — a double seam is validated by body-hook, cover-hook and overlap measurements, not by looking at it.
