Medical Packaging Machine
For a medical device, the package is part of the product — it is the sterile barrier that keeps the device aseptic until the clinician opens it. A medical packaging machine therefore has to deliver a validated peelable seal with a controlled peel force, not just a "closed" pouch. The seal that is too strong tears the Tyvek; too weak breaches the barrier. That window is the whole game.
Medical Packaging Machine
| Format | Barrier | Seal type | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tyvek/PE pouch | Breathable + sterile | Flat heat seal | Single devices, kits |
| Tyvek/tray (PETG) | Rigid protect | RF or heat crimp | Sharp / fragile devices |
| Form-fill-seal medical | Custom | 4-side seal | High volume |
ISO 11607 governs the sterile barrier. The seal must open with a consistent peel force (typically 1.0–4.0 N/15 mm for Tyvek/PE) leaving a clean fibre-tear, not a delamination. The machine variables:
A machine without jaw-temperature feedback and pressure mapping cannot hold this window across a shift — and you cannot validate what you cannot hold.
An Istanbul maker of urinary catheters ran Tyvek/PE pouches at 28 pouches/min with peel-force spread of 0.8–6.1 N (out of spec both ways) and a 1.2% channel-leak rate on dye test. The jaw was setpoint-only.
We fitted jaw-temperature feedback, raised dwell 0.3 s, mapped pressure with shim gauges, and set a validated window (165°C, 0.35 MPa, 1.4 s). Outcome:
| Metric | Before | After |
|---|---|---|
| Peel force spread | 0.8–6.1 N | 1.4–2.6 N |
| Channel-leak (dye) | 1.2% | 0.05% |
| Tyvek burnout | Occasional | None |
| Speed | 28/min | 29/min |
Channel leak = sterility breach. A channel leak is invisible to a pull test but fails the dye test. Validation must include dye or bubble testing, not just peel force.
MDR device rules, ISO 13485, ISO 11607 validation, and UDI on the pouch. CE under MDR; technical file with seal validation.
FDA device rules, 21 CFR, QSR, and a validated sterile barrier per ISO 11607. UDI/GTIN required.
Halal where relevant; humid climate demands verified barrier integrity. Tyvek breathability aids EtO sterilization.
GCC/SASO conformity, Arabic label, and tamper-evident pouch. Heat-stable seal window for summer plants.
No — it is not built to the ISO 11607 peel window and lacks pressure mapping. A medical sealer is a different machine.
Typically 1.0–4.0 N/15 mm for Tyvek/PE, with a clean fibre-tear. Your validation master plan sets the exact band.
A channel leak (uneven pressure) passes a pull test but breaches sterility. You need dye or bubble testing, not just peel.
For breathable sterile barrier (EtO/gamma), yes. Non-breathable film traps sterilant; Tyvek vents it.
