Flow Behavior Is the Decider

Two parameters tell you which machine:

• Carr index (bulk vs tapped density): <15% = free-flowing (cup or auger fine); 15–25% = fair (auger); >25% = cohesive (auger with agitator, or net weigh).
• Floodability (aerated powder runs like liquid): needs a twin-pitch auger with fine-dwell, or it overfills.

A cohesive, floodable powder (e.g. cocoa, curry) on a volumetric cup will wander ±5% because every scoop compacts differently. Move it to an auger with a bridge breaker and you are at ±1%.

Field Data: A Thai Seasoning Line

A Bangkok producer of a granulated seasoning (Carr 22%, some oil) ran a volumetric cup at 45 pouches/min with ±3.4% — the oil made density swing through the hopper. Giveaway was 2.8%.

We switched to a twin-pitch auger with a hopper agitator and level control, keeping the same pouch sealer. Outcome:

Density swing is invisible: A volumetric cup looks cheap until the product compacts mid-run. If your bulk density varies >5% through a batch, skip the cup.

Selection Errors

• Cup on a cohesive powder. You pay in giveaway what you saved on the machine.
• Auger on free-flow coarse granules. A cup or weigher is cheaper and just as accurate.
• No flow test before quote. Without Carr index and floodability, the supplier guesses — and guesses wrong.
