Auger Filler
The accuracy of an auger filler is decided by the screw's pitch, flight diameter and the way it displaces product — not by how powerful the servo is. Buyers who spec an auger filler by motor wattage or "speed" usually end up with a machine that doses fast but wanders ±3% because the helix was matched to the wrong powder. The dosing element is the product; the motor just turns it.
Auger Filler
An auger filler delivers a fixed volume per revolution: dose = (pitch × flight area × revolutions) minus slip. Slip is the product that falls back through the flight gap instead of advancing. Two things control slip:
For a 10–50 g dose band, a twin-pitch auger (coarse 70% / fine 30%) with a short fine-dwell at cutoff is the standard way to get both speed and a clean stop.
| Powder | Bulk density (g/mL) | CV at 25 g, single pitch | CV at 25 g, twin-pitch + dwell |
|---|---|---|---|
| Whey protein isolate | 0.52 | 1.8% | 0.5% |
| Curcumin blend | 0.61 | 2.4% | 0.7% |
| Cocoa powder | 0.40 | 2.9% | 1.1% |
| Laundry detergent | 0.55 | 2.1% | 0.8% |
| Talc (pharma) | 0.75 | 1.2% | 0.4% |
The pattern is consistent: free-flowing, high-density powders hold tight CV on a single pitch; low-density, aerated powders need the twin-pitch and a fine-dwell to stop the "stream tail" that causes overfill.
A Vietnamese contract packer running 500 g protein jars at 38 jars/min saw giveaway at 2.1% on a single-pitch auger — costing them roughly 1.1 t of product a month. The powder was 0.52 g/mL and aerated from a high-speed mixer.
We re-cut the auger to twin-pitch, added a 70/30 coarse/fine split with a 380 ms fine-dwell, and fitted a level sensor in the hopper to hold constant head pressure (variable head was the hidden CV driver). Outcome:
| Metric | Before | After |
|---|---|---|
| CV at 500 g | 1.8% | 0.5% |
| Giveaway | 2.1% | 0.4% |
| Speed | 38 jars/min | 39 jars/min |
| Product saved / month | — | ~0.9 t |
Hidden variable: Hopper head pressure. As the hopper empties, the auger sees less back-pressure and doses light. A level sensor paying for itself in two months is normal, not exceptional.
EU GMP Annex 1 for pharma: 316L contact, electropolish ≤0.8 µm Ra, CIP, full material traceability. Food lines follow 10/2011 for contact surfaces.
FDA 21 CFR 211 cleaning validation, IQ/OQ/PQ documented. Pharma auger fillers need tool-free disassembly for washdown.
Halal lubricant and CIP records. High RH makes a sealed hopper and desiccant purge necessary for hygroscopic protein.
GCC/SASO conformity, Arabic labeling. Foil or high-barrier jars for 12-month shelf life in 45°C warehouses.
No single helix covers that range well. Plan a coarse auger for the high end and a fine auger for the low end, or accept ±2% at the extremes.
Almost always hopper head pressure falling as it empties, or product heating at the auger from friction. A level sensor and a cooled auger housing fix both.
For any powder above 8% moisture or with oil content (curry, cocoa), yes. Without it you get intermittent stalls.
±0.5–1% on free-flowing powders with twin-pitch; ±1.5–2% on aerated or sticky ones. Demand a 30-sample CV.
