Auger Filler for Powder
An auger filler for powder lives or dies above the screw, in the hopper — because the screw can only meter what arrives at a consistent rate. If the powder bridges, floods, or compacts in the hopper, the auger doses garbage no matter how well it is cut. The hopper agitator, cone angle, and head control are what make a powder auger accurate, and they are tuned to the powder's flow properties, not to a generic design.
Auger Filler for Powder
| Property | How to measure | Design consequence |
|---|---|---|
| Carr index | (tapped − bulk)/tapped density | >25% → aggressive agitator, steep cone |
| Floodability | aerated flow test | Floodable → twin-pitch + fine-dwell |
A free-flowing powder (Carr <15) needs almost no agitation — a gentle stir prevents rat-holing. A cohesive powder (Carr >25, e.g. cocoa, curry) needs a powered agitator and a cone angle steep enough that it cannot bridge.
When a powder is aerated (just discharged from a mixer, or dropped through a height), it behaves like a liquid and "floods" the auger — the screw cannot cut a clean dose, it just pours. The fix is mechanical: a twin-pitch auger (coarse for bulk, fine for cutoff) with a short fine-dwell that stops the stream tail, plus a level sensor holding constant head pressure so the flood dose stays repeatable.
A Warsaw producer of drinking cocoa (Carr 31%, floodable, 0.40 g/mL) ran a single-pitch auger with a passive stirrer at 33 jars/min. Tolerance wandered ±2.9% and floods caused 2.2% overfill bursts.
We fitted a powered agitator with steep cone, twin-pitch auger, 380 ms fine-dwell, and a level sensor. Outcome:
| Metric | Before | After |
|---|---|---|
| Tolerance | ±2.9% | ±1.1% |
| Flood overfill bursts | 2.2% | 0.1% |
| Head pressure variation | High | <2% |
| Speed | 33/min | 34/min |
Head pressure is the hidden CV: As the hopper empties, floodable powder doses lighter. A level sensor is not optional on a cohesive, aerated powder — it is the CV control.
EU GMP / food 10/2011; 316L contact, electropolish, CIP. Powder allergen lines (cocoa cross-contact) need segregated cleaning validation.
FDA 21 CFR for food/pharma; cGMP cleaning. NTEP scale if trade-weighed.
Halal records; humidity drives sealed hopper and desiccant purge on hygroscopic cocoa.
GCC/SASO conformity, Arabic label. Heat-stable auger housing and seal for summer.
The powder is aerated/floodable and the screw cannot cut a clean dose. Twin-pitch + fine-dwell + level control stops it.
For cohesive powders (Carr >25) yes. A passive stirrer lets it bridge and stall the feed.
±1–1.5% with twin-pitch and level control; ±3% on a single pitch. Demand a 30-sample CV.
For food/pharma powder, yes — corrosion and cleanability. Electropolish ≤0.8 µm Ra for pharma.
